PT Grahamakmur Ciptapratama (GMCP) distributed environmentally friendly bubu (crab pot) fishing gear to fishermen in Gresik and Pamekasan, East Java, through a fishing gear swap program conducted on 30–31 December 2025. The program aims to support sustainable blue swimming crab (rajungan) fisheries while reducing risks to marine mammals and other protected marine species.

Fishing Gear Swap to Support Sustainable Rajungan Fisheries

The fishing gear swap initiative replaces fishing gear that has the potential to cause bycatch or entanglement with standardized bubu traps that are safer and more selective. These bubu traps help fishermen catch rajungan responsibly while minimizing interactions with marine mammals such as dolphins and whales.

According to GMCP, adopting environmentally friendly fishing gear is a key step in maintaining healthy rajungan populations and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Indonesia’s fisheries sector.

Distribution Activities in Gresik and Pamekasan

The activities took place over two days in coastal fishing communities in Gresik and Pamekasan (Madura Island). Along with the distribution of bubu fishing gear, GMCP also conducted outreach sessions on proper gear usage, sustainable fishing practices, and marine conservation principles.

Fishermen participating in the program expressed positive feedback, highlighting that bubu traps are effective in maintaining catch quality while supporting environmentally responsible fishing operations.

Supporting Marine Mammal-Safe Fisheries

One of the main objectives of the program is to promote marine mammal-safe fishing practices. Unlike certain types of fishing gear that can entangle marine mammals, bubu traps are stationary and designed to reduce the risk of accidental capture of non-target species.

Through this initiative, GMCP contributes to broader efforts to align Indonesia’s blue swimming crab fisheries with sustainability standards and marine biodiversity protection goals.

GMCP’s Commitment to Responsible Fisheries

As part of its ongoing sustainability commitment, PT Grahamakmur Ciptapratama continues to collaborate with fishing communities to encourage responsible fishing practices that balance economic livelihoods with environmental protection.

GMCP plans to continue and expand fishing gear swap programs in other coastal regions, supporting sustainable rajungan fisheries while helping protect marine mammals and marine ecosystems for future generations.
