PT KBT Again Distributes Bubu Fishing Gear to Fishermen in Waruduwur, Cirebon to Support Marine Mammal
by adminapri January 11, 2026 0 commentsPT KBT has once again distributed environmentally friendly bubu (crab pot) fishing gear to fishermen in Waruduwur, Cirebon, as part of a fishing gear swap program aimed at supporting sustainable blue swimming crab (rajungan) fisheries while ensuring the protection of marine mammals. The activity was carried out with assistance from APRI Field Support.
This initiative reflects PT KBT’s continued commitment to promoting responsible fishing practices in one of Indonesia’s key rajungan production areas.
Fishing Gear Swap to Promote Sustainable Rajungan Fisheries
The fishing gear swap program focuses on replacing fishing gear that may pose risks to marine ecosystems with standardized bubu traps, which are more selective and environmentally friendly. The use of bubu traps helps reduce bycatch and minimizes the risk of accidental interactions with marine mammals such as dolphins and whales.
By encouraging fishermen to adopt safer fishing gear, PT KBT supports long-term sustainability within Indonesia’s blue swimming crab supply chain.
Implementation in Waruduwur, Cirebon
The distribution activity took place in Waruduwur, Cirebon, a coastal area recognized as an important hub for the rajungan commodity. Fishermen in this region rely heavily on blue swimming crab fishing as a primary source of livelihood.
During the activity, PT KBT, accompanied by APRI Field Support, not only distributed bubu fishing gear but also provided guidance on proper gear usage, responsible fishing methods, and sustainability principles aligned with industry standards.
Supporting Marine Mammal-Safe Fisheries
One of the main objectives of the program is to promote marine mammal-safe fishing practices. Bubu traps are stationary and designed to be selective, significantly reducing the likelihood of marine mammals becoming entangled or injured.
This approach aligns with broader efforts to protect marine biodiversity while maintaining the productivity and economic value of rajungan fisheries.
PT KBT’s Commitment to Responsible Fisheries
Through the fishing gear swap program in Waruduwur, PT KBT demonstrates its ongoing commitment to supporting fishing communities and strengthening sustainable fisheries management. Collaboration with APRI Field Support further enhances outreach and ensures that sustainability messages are effectively delivered at the community level.
PT KBT plans to continue implementing similar initiatives in other coastal regions, contributing to the long-term sustainability of Indonesia’s blue swimming crab fisheries while safeguarding marine mammals and marine ecosystems for future generations.
