Fishing Gear Swap Program : APRI Distribution of Crab Traps Fishing Gear (Bubu) to Crab Fishers in Pamekasan Regency
by adminapri November 18, 2025 0 commentsPamekasan, October 27, 2025 — Great things are happening for blue swimming crab fishers in Pamekasan! As part of an ongoing effort to promote sustainable fisheries, a new initiative has introduced bubu (crab traps) to local fishers—marking an important shift toward more responsible fishing practices.
Why Bubu Matters for Sustainability. The bubu is more than just a fishing tool. It’s a game-changer for crab fisheries. Unlike traditional gillnets, which can unintentionally catch other marine species, the bubu is highly selective. This means fewer incidents of bycatch, healthier marine ecosystems, and fishing practices that are kinder to the environment.
As global markets increasingly demand sustainable seafood, tools like the bubu play a crucial role. This transition also helps Indonesia meet the requirements of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) issued by NOAA in the United States—an important step for keeping Indonesian crab products competitive worldwide.
A Bright Future for Local Crab Fishers
During the event, 50 fishers from several villages across Pamekasan gathered to learn about the benefits of using bubu traps. The session included hands-on guidance, best practices, and conversations around long-term sustainability. More importantly, it sparked a collective commitment among local fishers to shift toward more eco-friendly fishing methods.
Supporting a More Sustainable Crab Industry
With the adoption of bubu traps, Pamekasan is taking a confident step toward a future where crab fishing remains productive, sustainable, and internationally competitive. It’s a win for fishers, a win for marine life, and a win for Indonesia’s blue swimming crab industry.
The hope is that these efforts will inspire more regions to adopt responsible fishing gear—ensuring that the ocean continues to provide for generations to come.
