The dry season in 2023 is one of the longest dry seasons in recent years according to Mr Sukaji, a fisherman. The dry season is usually referred to by fishermen as the east season, where in this season the catch of crab, fish and squid will decrease due to the climate. Usually August to September is the peak/end of the eastern season. One of the causes of this shift in seasons is global warming, because this long dry season occurs along the Pantura (North Coast of Java) and even Indonesia.
The prolonged eastern monsoon causes many fishermen to experience difficulty in going to sea because the catch is drastically reduced. Because of this, many fishermen are now turning to sea as crew members on purse seine vessels or looking for side jobs on land. However, there are also many positive impacts from the long dry season, one of which is salt pond workers. Low rainfall and hot temperatures have resulted in salt production continuing to increase with good quality and competitive prices. As of October 5 2023, there were at least 11 fishermen in Dukuh Layur who had temporarily changed professions to become salt pond farmers. Becoming a salt pond farmer is one solution to meet the daily needs of fishermen in addition to going to sea, because if you are forced to go to sea but the results are small it will not be enough to meet your needs.
