Monitoring of FIP in Madura, Restocking, and Handover the Crab Box/Crab Apartment, Madura, September 20-21, 2019

Fisheries and marine reources is one of the natural resources that play a big role in the people’s lives. Indonesia as archipelago country that the 2/3 area is a water has potential in fisheries and marine resources. One of the the fisheries and marine resources is blue swimming crab. Blue swimming crab is a fisheries and marine commodity that has high volume and value for export. Coastal communities make use of the blue swimming crab as a source of income to support their family.

However, the catch of blue swimming crab that continously done, will be decreasing it stock in the nature if the catching is not consider the sustainability aspects. To prevent and overcome the stock decreasing of blue swimming crab, APRI from long time ago was done the Fisheries Improvement Program (FIP) for blue swimming crab in Indonesia. APRI FIP covers various aspects, including the traceability system, stock assessment and enhancement, co-management, modified trap, enforcement and compliance, and empowerment.

In this time, through the FIP which has been done and is beeing done, APRI try to realize the sustainable blue swimming crab fisheries through the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. In order to the FIP implementation and MSC certification, APRI, Bappenas, UNDP, and the Agency of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of East Java Province, organized the monitoring of blue swimming crab FIP in Madura, restocking, and handover the blue swimming crab egg berried female temporary shelter (crab box/crab apartment). This event also in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals 14 (SDG’s 14) and included in National Midterm Development Plan 2020-2024.

This event conducted on September 20-21, 2019, where attended by Marine and Fisheries Director of Bappenas Dr. Ir. Sri Yanti JS, MPM., the Head of Brackish Water Aquaculture and Fisheries Center of Jepara Mr. Sugeng Raharjo, the Agency of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of East Java Province, several representatives from APRI members, mini plant businessman, and blue swimming crab fishermens.

The first day was the visit to mini plant in Sumenep to see the implementation of traceability system through the control document. And the second day, was the restocking and the handover of crab box/crab apartment. Restocking activity done with releasing the 250,000 crablets in Baddurih Village waters, Pamekasan, Madura. The crablets was from the Brackish Water Aquaculture and Fisheries Center of Jepara/BBPBAP Jepara, which was brought directly by the Head of BBPBAP Jepara Mr. Sugeng Raharjo and his team.

After the restocking done, there were several activity, including the handover of 10 units of crab box/crab apartment to the fishermens of Pagagan Village, Pamekasan, Madura. This activity was also filled by the statements from Dr. Ir. Sri Yanti JS, MPM., the Agency of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of East Java Province, the Agency of Fisheries of Pamekasan, and the representatives of Pagagan Village. And then continued with sharing about blue swimming crab fisheries management in Madura by Executive Director of APRI Dr. Hawis Madduppa.

Sharing session was then filled by Mr. Mustain who is one of Jepara fishermen that was succeed to implement the crab box/crab apartment in his area and empower his group. In the sharing session, participants especially from the fishermens look enthusiastic to ask questions and discuss, so there was a good transfer of knowledge. Through this activity, APRI hopes that the blue swimming crab FIP can continue to develop and have an optimal impact on the sustainability of blue swimming crab fisheries, and is able to support APRI’s efforts in obtaining MSC certification. Let’s together realize a sustainable blue swimming crab fisheries.
