APRI Advances Sustainable Through Fishing Gear Swap Program in Lamongan

Lamongan, 7 November 2025 — The Indonesian Blue Swimming Crab Association (APRI) continues to accelerate the transition toward sustainable and environmentally responsible crab fisheries through the implementation of its Fishing Gear Swap Program in Kemantren Village, Lamongan Regency.

As part of APRI’s long-term sustainability roadmap, the program supports the replacement of unsustainable fishing methods with collapsible crab pots (bubu)—a gear type proven to reduce bycatch and significantly lower risks to marine mammals. This initiative also aligns with the requirements of the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), ensuring that Indonesia’s blue swimming crab supply chain remains competitive in the global market.

In collaboration with the Lamongan Fisheries Office, APRI distributed 1,000 units of collapsible crab pots to local blue swimming crab fishers. The initiative aims not only to improve compliance with international sustainability standards but also to enhance the long-term welfare of coastal communities.

By equipping fishers with safer and more sustainable gear, APRI is helping secure the future of Indonesia’s blue swimming crab fisheries—ensuring ecological balance, economic resilience, and global market access.

A small step today marks a significant push toward a more sustainable fisheries future.
